BIOS OF 2007 SPEAKERS

Rita Anderson describes herself as an average mother and grandmother who had never thought of herself as a leader. She started her animal rights career late in life, and is now dedicated to the plight of any and all animals who suffer, especially at the hands of humans. She is the Director of the Committee for Research Accountability, a Project of In Defense of Animals.  Her main focus is on ending vivisection, and in 2006 she convinced the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center to release 11 monkeys from their laboratory to a sanctuary. She has also been successful in working on wildlife issues and the recent rescue of a group of neglected horses in Boulder, CO.

Kari Bagnall is founder and director of Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary. Kari was working as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children when a ‘pet’ monkey named Samantha was given to her in 1993. Soon after Samantha came into Kari’s life, more monkeys followed and Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary was born. Jungle Friends is home to over 80 new-world monkeys with an ever-growing waiting list. Most were cast offs from the exotic pet trade, others were retired from laboratory research. Jungle Friends also has an intern program designed to help others open sanctuaries and to teach people to have compassion for all of the Earth’s remarkable inhabitants.
Lorri Bauston is considered a “pioneer” of the farmed animal sanctuary movement. In 1986, Lorri co-founded Farm Sanctuary, which opened the country’s first shelter for farmed animals. For 18 years, she directed the group’s shelter and fundraising efforts, and served as the organization’s Executive Director until 2004. In 2005, Lorri Bauston formed a new nonprofit organization, Animal Acres, and opened the Los Angeles farmed animal sanctuary and compassionate living center. Today, the sanctuary is home to over 100 rescued farmed animals and hosts a variety of special events and volunteer programs to teach people to extend compassion to ALL beings.
Heidi Boghosian is the executive director of the National Lawyers Guild, a progressive bar association established in 1937. She is co-host of the weekly civil liberties radio show Law and Disorder on WBAI in New York and several affiliates. She has published writings and law review articles on policing, capital punishment and dissent. Her books reviews have appeared in The Federal Lawyer Magazine and the New York Law Journal. She received her JD from Temple Law School where she was editor in chief of the Temple Political & Civil Rights Law Review.
Nikki Bollaert has helped nonprofit organizations, higher education institutions, and churches reach their fundraising goals throughout her 14-year career as a development professional. As founder and president of Bollaert Associates, Inc., Nikki provides consulting and hands-on development services to organizations seeking to maximize mission impact through efficient fundraising operations. Nikki holds a Master of Nonprofit Management from Regis University, is a Certified Fundraising Executive, and a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy®. Committed to the animal welfare movement since childhood, Nikki looks forward to assisting activists with fundraising counsel.
Mitchell Bolt, also known as “The Turtle Guy,” is the Inland California Coordinator for The Sea Turtle Restoration Project. For the past 17 years, he has dedicated himself to working for the environment through industrial and residential recycling, environmental advocacy and volunteer teaching. Mitchell has spoken to thousands of students about the importance of saving our Earth by taking a close look at our ocean’s most precious inhabitant – the sea turtle. He has designed presentations for both younger & older students that focus on sea turtles, the causes of their rapid decline, and how to save the few that remain. His efforts have been featured in newspapers, newsletters, radio talk shows, and TV news.
Share Bond is founder of Protect R Wildlife, a wildlife advocacy group, SKUNKS and California Animal Rescue. After assisting with orangutan studies in Borneo she decided to use that knowledge to save the animals in her own backyard. She rescues domestic, farm, exotic and wild animals (specializing in the skunk), and is dedicated to educational outreach for how to coexist with our native backyard wild animals, spec- ializing in humane solutions to so-called nuisance wildlife problems. She has started new programs such as Wildlife Shui, TNR+ & Neighborhood Watch 4 Animals. She has authored many articles and several animal books, including her newest, "An Earth Divided:  Crucified For Caring."
Michael Budkie is Founder and Executive Director of Stop Animal Exploitation Now! (SAEN). Since 1996, SAEN has worked to end the abuse of animals in laboratories. By using the US Freedom of Information Act, Michael has obtained numerous documents showing the abuse to which primates were subjected in U.S. laboratories. SAEN follows up by local publicity campaigns and complaints to government. Michael is a member of the Coalition to End Primate Experimentation and an organizer of the two nationwide Primate Freedom Tours. He worked for In Defense of Animals for several years. He has also worked for Last Chance for Animals, and was co-founder of the National Activist Network.
Tim Canova is a law professor and academic dean at the Chapman University School of Law in Orange County, CA, where he directs the Center for Global Trade & Development, teaches courses in Animal Law and Endangered Species and Marine Mammal Protection, and studies the impact of corporate power and global trade on human rights and animal welfare. He has written critically about the World Trade Organization, including the WTO’s shrimp-turtle and tuna-dolphin cases. He has advocated for shareholder proposals to stop the torture of farm animals by large corporate agribusinesses, as well as for a change in standing doctrine to provide legal guardian protection in our courtrooms for animals. He is presently directing the Bob Barker to the OC project.
Rick Corbett strapped into the vegan movement at the age of 13, specializing in farmed animal issues and youth outreach. At the age of 20, he now holds 2 bachelor’s degrees, has spoken all over the country, garnered an activism award, and is now in the middle of his oh-so-important quest to veganize Hollywood. “Why hello, Ms. Producer! Would you care for a banana? Perhaps, a headshot & resume?” Having worked with PBS, MTV, Radio Disney, and CBS/Paramount as an actor, voice over artist, host, and comedian, he seeks to shine a spotlight on animal issues. Oh yes, and he would love you to attend his speeches (he promises they won't bore you).
Saurabh Dalal advocates for veganism and Ahinsa (non-violence) as compelling solutions to many global problems. He is Deputy Chair of the International Vegetarian Union, President of the Vegetarian Union of North America, President of the Vegetarian Society of DC, and volunteers in various capacities with numerous like-minded non-profits. A lifelong vegetarian and vegan since 1991, he has been active as a follower of the Jain religion on the local and international levels. Saurabh holds graduate degrees in Physics and Engineering and explores ways to integrate sound science into the movement.
Karen Davis is the founder and President of United Poultry Concerns, Inc., a nonprofit organization that promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl and includes a sanctuary. She has a PhD in English from the University of Maryland-College Park where she taught for 12 years in the English Department and pioneered a course on the role of animals in the Western philosophic and literary tradition in the University Honors Program. In 2002, Karen was inducted into the U.S. Animal Rights Hall of Fame "for outstanding contributions to animal liberation." She has also authored numerous essays, articles, and books.
Debra Erenberg is Organizing Director for Rainforest Action Network, where she oversees the development of local activist groups, online community-building, and outreach to young people. In her “free time,” she serves as Deputy Director of The Essence of True Humanity Is Compassion (The ETHIC) and the ETHIC’s Darfur Pledge campaign to end the genocide in western Sudan. Prior to joining RAN, Debra served as Director of Affiliate Resources for NARAL Pro-Choice America. In more than eighteen years of grassroots organizing, election campaigns and nonprofit management, she has also worked with Center for Science in the Public Interest, PETA, the Great Ape Project, and many others.
John Feldmann, lead singer and guitarist for the band Goldfinger, is a vegan animal rights activist and supporter of the Animal Liberation Front. With a strong voice for human and animal rights, John incorporates the message into his music with songs such as Free Me, which speaks of the treatment of animals raised for food, accompanied by a video of slaughterhouse footage. In 2003, John’s house was raided by the FBI due to an alleged connection to an Animal Liberation Front vandalism. The charges were dropped due to lack of evidence and John won a law suit over the incident. This inspired him to write a song called Iron Fist, the first of Goldfinger’s 2005 release album, Disconnection Notice.
Christine Garcia is the vegan founder and lead counsel of The Animal Law Office.  Aside from litigating for animal rights as well as defending and suing on behalf of animal rights activists, she also produces and directs the television show Ethics and Animals which airs every other Tuesday in San Francisco. Currently, Christine is legislating for new laws for animals as the Chair of the San Francisco Animal Control and Welfare Commission.
Timothy Gorski is Producer/Director of Rattle the Cage Productions. He has a Masters degree in film and visual communications. He's worked in television for 12 years and has recently created PSA's for VIVA, Harpseals, Wildlife Care Center, SHAC, and Dolphin Freedom Foundation. Tim’s 1993 anti-captivity documentary received 12 awards in 45 festivals. He's also an animal/disaster rescue specialist volunteering for the Wildlife Care Center and certified through the American Humane Association. He spent 3 weeks in New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina pet rescues, as well as 2 weeks in Thailand in after the 2004 tsunami. Tim also owns and maintains a controversial site, www.MiamiSeaPrison.com.
Tammy Grimes is founder and executive director of Dogs Deserve Better, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ending the chaining and penning of dogs, and bringing 'man's best friend' into the home and family. She is an animal advocate and artist living in rural Pennsylvania. Tammy holds a B.A. in Art from the University of Maryland, and a B.A. in Naturology from the American Institute for Holistic Theology. Her animal-advocacy-focused art has produced two series of note to date: "Little Girl Looking" and the "New Orleans After Katrina Series" Her art site can be reached at www.LittleGirlLooking.com.
Camille Hankins is co-founder of Win Animal Rights (WAR), a group of hardcore, grassroots, direct action campaigners dedicated to bringing an end to the brutality and killing at Huntingdon Life Sciences and ultimately to total animal liberation. With almost 20 years of sales, marketing and management expertise, Camille specializes in using her knowledge base to capitalize on critical weaknesses of animal exploitation businesses. In addition to her role with WAR, Camille acts as a Press Officer for the North American Animal Liberation Press Office and annually serves as Exhibit Coordinator for the AR200X national conferences.
Dr. Alex Hershaft founded the Vegetarian Information Service in 1976 and FARM in 1982. He launched World Vegetarian Day in 1977, World Farm Animals Day in 1983, the Great American Meatout in 1985, Gentle Thanksgiving in 1990, and CHOICE (Citizens for Healthy Options In Children's Education) in 1995. He organized 17 national animal rights conferences including the Action For Life Conference that launched the U.S. AR movement in 1981. He is a member of the Vegetarian and the Animal Rights Hall of Fame. He describes himself as a "late bloomer", having accomplished all this after earning a Ph.D. in chemistry and devoting nearly 30 years to science research and consulting.
Pattrice Jones, coordinator of the Eastern Shore Sanctuary & Education Center, nurtures and advocates for chickens in the heart of a rural region dominated by the poultry industry. An activist in various social change movements since the 1970s and now the coordinator of the Global Hunger Alliance, Pattrice speaks and writes frequently of the connections between earth, animal, and human liberation. She formerly taught courses on psychology and social change activism at the University of Michigan and now teaches public speaking at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. She is the author of Aftershock: Confronting Trauma in a Violent World: A Guide for Activists and Their Allies (Lantern Books).
Dr. Elliot Katz began his career as a trained veterinarian. Recognizing the immense animal suffering that takes place around the world, he founded In Defense of Animals (IDA) in 1983. IDA's campaigns and programs cover animals around the world, through investigation, rescue and rehabilitation, public education, political and consumer advocacy, and litigation. From working to protect the rights of America's companion animals, to rescuing feral goats on Catalina Island, to fighting to end the horrific trade in dog meat in Korea, IDA's campaigns reach far and wide.
Shannon Keith is an animal rights lawyer, activist, and documentary director/producer. In 2006, after three years of filming, she released a documentary film about the Animal Liberation Front entitled Behind the Mask: The Story Of The People Who Risk Everything To Save Animals. The documentary was produced in response to what the ALF sees as a growing bias within the mainstream media towards the animal rights movement, both above and underground. Shannon founded and runs Uncaged Films /ARME (Animal Rescue, Media & Education), which produced the documentary.
Marti Kheel is a writer and activist in the areas of animal liberation, environmental ethics and ecofeminism. In 1982, Marti co-founded Feminists for Animal Rights. Over the years, her primary goal has been to develop an ecofeminist philosophy that is capable of bridging the seemingly disparate movements and philosophies of feminism, animal liberation, environmental ethics, and holistic health. She has Masters Degrees in Women's Studies and Sociology and received her doctorate in religious studies from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. Her forthcoming book is titled Nature Ethics: An Ecofeminist Approach.
Andrew Knight BSc, BVMS, CertAW, MRCVS, as a veterinary student, used legal action & media exposure to introduce Western Australia’s first humane veterinary surgical course. Instead of killing pigs, Andrew steril-ized dogs & cats from shelters, gaining even more surgical experience. He then founded Animal Consultants International to increase effective-ness of the movement through international skill-sharing. In 2007, he became President of Animals Count, the first UK political party for the animals. Nearing his antivivisection PhD, he publishes studies in bio-medical journals, 3 of which have received awards. His expertise include animals in education, vegan companion animal diets and body surfing.
Elizabeth Kucinich, best known for her marriage to Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, is a vegan advocate for peace. A native of London, UK, she has spent time traveling the world, making efforts to help poor children in India and assist communities in Tanzania. She moved to the U.S. shortly after receiving her master’s degree in Inter-national Conflict Analysis. Elizabeth and Dennis were married in 2005 and work together to promote peace and speak out against injustices. The vegan couple attends events to raise public awareness about animal-related issues and hosts vegan fundraising events for the Kucinich presid-ential campaign. She will give the Keynote Address at the Saturday night Plenary session.
Dr. Charlotte Laws is an author, a Los Angeles Commissioner and Greater Valley Glen Councilmember. She is the recipient of the Los Angeles 2006 Animal Humanitarian Award and founded two organizations: the League for Earth and Animal Protection (LEAP) in 1992 and the Los Angeles Directors of Animal Welfare (DAW) in 2004. She has a Ph.D. in Social Ethics, in addition to two Master’s Degrees and two BA Degrees. She completed post-doctoral study at Oxford University in Philosophy. Her forthcoming book is titled, Armed for Ideological Warfare: Spinoza and the Animal Rights Movement.
Greg Lawson has been a National Park Service ranger for 22 years and the environmental reasons are a strong motivation for his veganism.  For eight years, he was lead journalist for Animal Rights Online.  President of the Vegetarian Society of El Paso, Greg also has co-hosted an AR/vegan radio show, ACT Radio, for the last four years.
Joshua Levine is an Investment Advisor with UBS Financial Services in Walnut Creek, CA where he specializes in developing socially and animal welfare – conscious investment solutions for individuals and nonprofit organizations. He is both knowledgeable and passionate about developing socially responsible screens, participating in shareholder activism, and identifying community investment opportunities. Joshua has a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Master’s degree in Environmental Science and Management. He now sits on the Corporate Sponsorship board of the Donald Bren School with his involvement in Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

Jacquie Lewis has a PhD in psychology. She is the president of SPEAK (Supporting and Promoting Ethics for the Animal Kingdom), an all-volunteer organization that has been educating people about the conditions of animals and the environment since 1990. SPEAK offers presentations at schools, civic groups, and public forums, providing information about animal rights. Jacquie recently organized and presented at a symposium on the Emotional Intelligence of Animals. She is very knowledgeable about birds, especially African Grey parrots.

Howard Lyman, known as the “Mad Cowboy,” is a former cattle rancher-turned vegan and food safety activist. In 1996, he appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show, resulting in the infamous “Veggie Libel” case brought on by Texas ranchers. He is the author of “Mad Cowboy: Plain truth from the cattle rancher who won’t eat meat” and former Director of the "Beyond Beef Campaign" & the Humane Society of the United States' "Eating With Conscience" Campaign; past President of both the International Vegetarian Union, and EarthSave International; and is currently President of Voice for a Viable Future. Howard travels over 100,000 miles every year as a speaker and lecturer.
Anthony Marr holds a science degree from the UBC and has worked as a field geophysicist and an environmental technologist. In 1995, he became a full time wildlife preservationist, which has brought him to India three times, earning him the title of the "Champion of the Bengal Tiger" in the Champions of the Wild TV series aired in 20 countries.  As an anti-hunting activist, he has conducted high profile campaigns in Canada for the bears and seals, and been to Japan twice for the whales and dolphins. He is the founder of Heal Our Planet Earth (HOPE) and is currently on his 5th Compassion for Animals Road Expedition (CARE-5), for the deer, covering 30 states. He is also the author of Omni-Science.
George Matejka, Ph.D., is Associate Professor and Chair of the Philosophy Department at Ursuline College .  Since he developed a course entitled Animals and Ethics in 2004, roughly 175 Ursuline students have elected to take this class.  He has published reviews of two books in the field of Animals and Ethics, including a review of Peter Singer’s In Defense of Animals:  The Second Wave, forthcoming in the June edition of the journal Teaching Philosophy.  George volunteers at Happy Tails cat sanctuary in Chesterland , Ohio , and resides in Lyndhurst , Ohio , with his two cats Peanut and Snuggles.
Armaiti May, DVM is an animal rights advocate and veterinarian currently practicing in Southern California. She became a vegan and activist as a student at UC Berkeley. An active officer in the campus advocacy group, Cal Vegetarians, she helped put on several vegan outreach and food giveaways. As a student at UC Davis, Armaiti helped coordinate a surgery “wetlab” training for fellow vet students as a humane alternative to the school’s terminal surgeries. During vet school she volunteered with Rural Area Veterinary Services to provide free care and sterilization surgeries to dogs, cats, and horses in economically disadvantaged communities.
Johanna McCloy is founder and director of Soy Happy, a consumer advocacy service that promotes the addition of vegetarian options on mainstream menus. Soy Happy is highly noted for its work in opening the door to vegetarian hot dogs in Major League Baseball stadiums but has also worked with other large concessions like zoos, pizzerias, spas, restaurants, & cafeterias. Soy Happy offers consultation to foodservice establishments and provides them liaison services with manufacturers of vegetetarian alternative fare. They offer a positive & practical approach to working with foodservice venues, empowering individuals to use their voices to effect menu items they seek.
Erica Meier is the Executive Director of Compassion Over Killing (COK), a non-profit animal advocacy organization based in Washington , D.C. that focuses on exposing cruelty to farmed animals and promoting vegetarian eating as a way to reduce animal suffering. COK’s undercover investigations inside factory farms have been featured in various newspapers, including the New York Times and the Washington Post. Before working at COK, Erica spent four years as an animal control officer in D.C., rescuing sick, injured, and homeless animals as well as enforcing animal protection laws.
Rev. John Gibb Millspaugh stands at the crossroads of animal ethics and religion. He holds two masters’ degrees, from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and Harvard Divinity School, where he founded a course on animal ethics. A former Humane Officer and lobbyist for an animal-focused environmental organization, he has toured factory farms and science labs with their owners’ permission. His thought on social ethics has been featured in various media including C-SPAN. A vegan of 11 years, he currently serves as minister of Tapestry, a Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Mission Viejo, California.
Dawn Moncrief is the Executive Director of FARM (Farm Animal Reform Movement), a non-profit, public interest organization advocating plant-based (vegan) diets to save animals, protect the environment, and improve health. She has two graduate degrees from George Washington University, one in International Relations specializing in economic development, the other specializing in women-in-development. Her specialty is the detrimental effects of animal agriculture on world hunger, particularly women in less-developed countries.
Christine Morrissey is the director of East Bay Animal Advocates, a grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to ending cruelty in California animal agriculture.  Since 2002, she has worked full-time as the Education Outreach Coordinator for the Contra Costa County Bar Association, where she organizes free animal law legal clinics. She holds a Bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley and resides in Oakland, CA.
Peter Muller has been involved in wildlife protection since 1976. He has participated in patrolling posted land against hunters during hunting season, given presentations on the deleterious effects of hunting at various universities and other groups, published numerous articles on this topic, debated and educated on radio and TV. Peter is currently President of LOHV (League of Humane voters), a PAC (Political Action Committee) whose mission is to support candidates for political office who promise their support of animal protective legislation.
Eva Najera is the Director of the Resource Center for Research and Learning About Animals (Centro de Recursos para la Investigación y el Aprendizaje sobre Animales - CRIAA), located in Monterrey, N.L., Mexico. She has also collaborated with local animal rights/welfare groups in Mexico since 2003, helping to create educational outreach programs, volunteer training and fundraising workshops. She is member of the Mexican Animal Network, a mexican AR collective grassroots organization. Eva holds a Bachelors degree in Humanities and Social Sciences from the Universidad de Monterrey (UdeM) and actively pursues an interest in applied ethics on human-animal relationships.
Alice Ng spent her earlier professional life as an IT consultant for large corporations. In1999, she moved to San Francisco to join WildAid’s International Shark Campaign where she coordinated efforts to combat the global shark crisis. She worked to develop international press relations, raise consumer & public awareness, and develop a traveling shark exhibit that was hosted in major cities in the US & Asia. Desiring more direction-action oriented work, she later co-founded Animal Balance and organized a successful project to humanely manage the cat and dog populations of the Galapagos Islands through sterilization. Today, Alice heads up the San Francisco offices of Animals Asia as their US Rep..
Jack Norris co-founded Vegan Outreach in 1993 and is currently the President. Vegan Outreach produces the booklets, Why Vegan, Try Vegetarian, and Even If You Like Meat, and has distributed 5 million copies to date. In 2005, Jack was elected to the U.S. Animal Rights Hall of Fame. He runs Vegan Outreach's Adopt-A-College program which has succeeded in handing a Vegan Outreach brochures to over one million students since it started in Fall of 2003. Jack is also a Registered Dietitian and author of Vitamin B12: Are You Getting It? and Staying Healthy On Plant-Based Diets. lauren Ornelas runs Food Empowerment Project. She has been active in the animal rights movement for over 19 years. After spending four years as National Campaign Coordinator for In Defense of Animals, lauren was asked by Viva!UK to start and run Viva!USA in 1999. As the leader of Viva!USA, she investigated factory farms and ran consumer campaigns. Some of her accomplishments include persuading Trader Joe’s to stop selling all duck meat, Pier 1 to stop using feathers and was the spark that got the CEO of Whole Foods Market to become a vegan. Her campaigns have been covered in USA Today, the Chicago Tribune, and other major media outlets.
Alex Pacheco began making headlines at the age of 21 by closing down the first laboratory in the U.S. on charges of cruelty to animals. As co-founder and Chairman of PETA for 20 years, he was responsible for expanding it into the world’s most recognizable animal rights charity. To date, he has been responsible for raising over $128 million for charity in donations alone. He is well-known for leading a 15-year battle to save a band of crippled lab animals called "The Silver Spring Monkeys.” His picture and articles have appeared in each edition of Animal Times for the last 20 years. In 1999, Alex became President of All American Animals and Humane America, the creator of 1-800-SAVE-A-PET.com.
Kristie Phelps is the Communications Director for In Defense of Animals (IDA) where she serves a variety of crucial roles. Kristie worked for five years as a Campaign Coordinator with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals where she traveled the globe protesting for numerous animal rights causes and working with activists to facilitate their work locally. Her work for animals has been featured in numerous publications. She graduated from Virginia Wesleyan College in 1998 with a degree in communications and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Library Science.
Eric Prescott publishes ananimalfriendlylife.com, an online resource for animal-related news, commentary, links, reviews & archived podcasts. He has been published by VegNews, the L.A. Times and weeklies such as L.A. CityBeat & OC Weekly. A filmmaker and activist, Eric is producing and directing a documentary based on John Robbins' book, "The Food Revolution." Last year he produced the 3rd Annual Artivist Film Festival, where he coordinated a forum on the true cost of eating meat. Eric has spoken publicly in the L.A. area for Animal Acres' Humane Ed program and for PCRM. He is contributing to Mark Hawthorne's forthcoming book, "Striking at the Roots: A Practical Guide to Animal Activism."
Jen Riley is Program Director of FARM (Farm Animal Reform Movement), a non-profit organization advocating vegan diets to save animals, protect the environment, and improve health. Working with grassroots activists around the world, Jen assists volunteers in hosting educational events for FARM’s annual campaigns including Veg Earth Day, Meatout, World Farm Animals Day, and Gentle Thanksgiving. In addition to empowering individuals to speak out on behalf of farmed animals, FARM runs several ongoing public education programs. Prior to her work with FARM, Jen volunteered with animal shelters & rescues, hosted fundraising events, & completed an internship at Farm Sanctuary.
Nathan Runkle serves full-time as the Executive Director of Mercy For Animals (MFA), an organization he founded in 1999. He has helped organize and execute MFA's investigations and open rescues at Ohio's four largest egg factory farms. Through his work with MFA, Nathan has appeared in stories by dozens of newspapers and radio programs, as well as on PBS, NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX affiliates. He has organized hundreds of demonstrations & educational outreach events and frequently speaks on AR issues at high schools and colleges. In 2006 Mercy For Animals was named "Non-Profit of the Year" by VegNews magazine.
Tom Scholz, best known as the founder of the rock band Boston, has been vegetarian for 25 years and is currently vegan. As a long-time supporter of many organizations including PETA and Greenpeace, he set up his own charitable foundation in 1987 to help animal protection, world hunger and the homeless. To date, his charitable foundation has donated several million dollars to those causes. He received the Mahatma Ghandi Award in 1987 and was named Man of the Year by the National Hospice Organization in 1988.
Christine Schwamberger is a Deputy District Attorney, Civil Division, for a county in northern Nevada. Her areas of concentration are real property and land use law. Her pro bono work has included lobbying state legislatures on animal welfare legislation, and coordinating volunteers for two successful initiative petition drives in Arizona which outlawed trapping on public lands and cockfighting. Currently, she is researching the legal status of animals as property, and the history of animal rights and vegetarianism. She speaks publicly at community forums, educational seminars and religious institutions to promote animal interests. She lives with her husband and four cats.
Brenda Shoss founded Kinship Circle in 1999 with a mission to empower people to take action in campaigns addressed to lawmakers, businesses, media and other institutions linked with animal protection concerns. As a professional writer and graphic designer, her goal is to provide tools for activists to write/speak/act influentially on behalf of all animals. In response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Kinship Circle played a vital role in coordinating Gulf Coast animal rescue, forming a second list/site, Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Relief. Recently, Brenda worked directly with Louisiana Senator Fontenot’s office, crafting letter campaigns and press materials to help pass the Pet Evacuation Bill.

Veda saw a photograph of an animal in a lab around noon one day in April 1988 and attended an animal rights meeting that night. She was vegetarian within weeks, vegan within months. She volunteered for The Animals Voice Magazine from 1988 through 1999, began working for AnimalsVoice.com in 2001. Veda has been on the Boards of Orange County People for Animals (OCPA) and the Northwest Animal Rights Network (NARN) and has been a speaker at past AR conferences. Additionally, she wrote "What to Eat When You Don't Eat Animals."
Marianne Thieme is a Dutch politician, animal activist and publicist. She is the chairwoman and political leader of the first animal rights party in history that is represented in a national parliament. Since last November, her Party for the Animals has won 2 seats in the Dutch National Parliament, 9 seats in the Dutch Provincial Governments and 1 seat in the Dutch Senate. She was voted Political Talent of the Year 2006 by the Dutch parliamentary press, Most Spicy Politician by women’s magazine Viva and Most Influential Woman for Farmer’s Incomes by the leading Dutch magazine on agriculture. Marianne has published a book on animal rights (‘The Animal’s Century’) and dozens of articles in Dutch national & regional newspapers on factory farming, hunting, animal testing, bird flu, ritual slaughtering, fur, fisheries and vegetarianism.
Cheri Thompson graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999. She became so moved by what she learned about the link between violence towards animals and violent crime in society, that in 2000, she gave up practicing law to write the first ever animal-assisted violence-prevention curriculum to be endorsed by a state board of education. Her program, The Healing Species, has appeared in numerous magazines and newspaper articles. Currently, she is an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Cheri speaks locally in SC and nationally regarding implementing character and violence prevention programs in communities across the US.
Shawn Vougeot (pronounced voo-ZHOH), two-time Grand Prize Winner of the Great American Contest of among over 4,000 songs worldwide, lends her musical intensity to her classical violin training. With a voice that is "soft, clear, at times operatic and …entrancing," Shawn intends on becoming one of the largest voices for the animals in the music industry. She is currently producing an animal advocate show for college touring which will incorporate the projection of animal imagery in hopes, through music and video, to heighten audience awareness of the intrinsic value of our fellow creatures. Captain Paul Watson has exhibited much diversity in his activism. Aside from being a co-founder of Greenpeace in 1972 and Greenpeace International in 1979 and founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in 1977, Paul was a Field Correspondent for Defenders of Wildlife between 1976 and 1980. He was a field rep for the Fund for Animals between 1978 and 1981. He co-founded Friends of the Wolf in 1984 and the Earthforce Environmental Society in 1977. Paul has received many awards and commendations over the years, the Genesis Award in 1998, and the U.S. Animal Rights Hall of Fame in 2002. He was chosen by Time Magazine as one of the environmental heroes of the 20th Century in the year 2000.
Susan Weingartner has been an Animal Rights advocate since the 1980's. She helped found the original board of EarthSave Los Angeles in 1992 after reading Diet For A New America, and meeting and working with John Robbins. She later re-started EarthSave L.A. as it's director in 2000 until 2003. She has worked with and supported many animal rights and environmental organizations, including SUPPRESS, PETA, Last Chance for Animals, Worldfest, The Genesis Awards, and others, and is helping with fundraising efforts for the SHAC 7. She is the mother of an 8 year old vegan son, William. Susan is a co-producer on the animal rights film, Behind The Mask.
Steve Whitman is a Board Director of Animal Rights International, founded in 1974 by the late Henry Spira. While working in executive positions at two manufacturing companies, Steve now devotes his volunteer time to ARI, where he contributes his financial and management expertise gained in the business world, and his first-hand experience with nonprofits as former executive director of a large environmental group. An engineering graduate of Cornell University, Steve is a strong advocate for the link between environmental health, vegetarianism, and compassion for our fellow animals. Recognizing that good works also need money, Steve will speak on planned giving at the AR2007 fundraising session.
Todd Winant has been delivering presentations to tens of thousands of people around the U.S. since he first introduced EarthSave’s Healthy School Lunch Program in 1991. Todd created and narrated the Earth Voice Food Choice DVD and is the author of the Earth Voice Food Choice Manual. It is designed to educate teachers, parents, students and food personnel on how to present, inform and inspire people to eat more unrefined, organically grown plant foods and fewer chemically processed animal and junk foods. The project is designed to initiate a positive shift in human awareness and in the hearts and minds of children, parents, teachers, and people in government.
Bruce Zeman, along with his dachshund Nathan, spearheaded the enacting of the "Guardian Campaign" in his hometown of Wanaque, NJ. The ordinance, which drew national media coverage, is known as "Nathan's Law." Bruce also initiated a humane education program in the schools - where (assisted by Nathan) he speaks to students about animal issues. He regularly appears in court on behalf of abused or neglected animals. In 2005, he conducted advanced animal rescue in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Bruce & Nathan were recently awarded the "Kinship Award" by the Doris Day Animal Foundation and will soon be releasing their first book, A Boy and His Dog - Nathan's Story.
