Existing U.S. and foreign animal protective laws and their enforcement

Presenters: Bull, Davis, Grimes, Lawson

Emma Bull
Voiceless (Australia), www.Voiceless.org.au

Emma Bull from Voiceless (Australia) will provide a brief introduction to animal protection laws in Australia.

Australian animal protection law has developed uniquely as a result of our federal parliamentary systems and our legislative structure. As a result we have a growing body of animal welfare Acts, Regulations, Codes and Guidelines. Emma will address whether these legislative instruments are able to, and whether they do, provide any meaningful protection for animals.

Part of Emma’s work at Voiceless is within Voiceless’s legal arm which aims to a) improve legal protection for animals b) monitor and enforce laws by increasing the accountability of government departments and other agencies responsible for enforcing animal protection laws; and c) facilitate the development of animal law by educating the community and the legal profession about legal issues that relate to animals and supporting cases that seek to establish important legal protections for animals.
